I got the chance to participate in an East Asian-styled shoot featuring three 3 couples. I don't often shoot East Asian cultured weddings or events, even though I'm Vietnamese-American. So this was a fun-styled shoot that offers vignettes of a Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, and interracial couple. I also got to meet other photographers that are local to my area all the way to Ohio and the Midwest.

East Asian Styled Shoot at Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg, VA

Finding a wedding photographer can be an overwhelming task. You post an "ISO" post on a wedding directory Facebook Group, and you can get a bunch of comments in less than five minutes.

<h2>Are you available for my wedding?</h2>
My website directs you to a booking page with all my photography wedding packages. When you click on a wedding package, a calendar shows all my availability. So, when you request to book or photograph a picture, you will immediately know if I'm available.

Also, I'm available on most weekends, including holiday weekends. Fridays and weekdays are available on my calendar, but they have limited availability. If you're curious about a weekday wedding, please ask me for your booking with me at least six months in advance. That is also the same for destination weddings.

<h2>How long have you been shooting weddings?</h2>
I've been shooting weddings for about 2.5-3 years now. I started as a second shooter for multiple wedding photographers, who helped me understand the structure and timeline of wedding photography, whether it's a traditional wedding, a wedding involving multiple locations, or a cultural multi-day wedding.

Here is a little fun fact about me: I was primarily a commercial/business event and headshot photographer before wedding photography. I was shooting for large events with over 15,000 attendees, political and public key figures, and large non-profit organizations.

99.99% of the time, I will be the photographer shooting your wedding. That 0.01% chance is if I'm super sick or an event happens, I can't be there anymore. But you can always count on me as the wedding photographer you book and hire to capture your day!

<h2>Will you have any assistants on our wedding day?</h2>
It depends on the package or if you add on a second shooter. I never charge extra for a photo assistant, but second shooters are always an add-on or part of your package. Second shooters are working with me to capture different angles and being two places in one if we are on a tight timeline. So, it never hurts to add on a second shooter or pick a package that includes a second shooter.

<h2>How many other weddings will you photograph that weekend?</h2>
For 2024, I'm photographing one wedding per weekend. This number varies year after year.

<h2>Can we see full galleries of a few recent weddings?</h2>
The answer will always be yes. On my website, I usually have a featured gallery that you can look at and review. However, you can always request to look at another gallery.

One thing to note. Before taking on wedding photography clients, I was second-shooting for other photographers. Therefore, many wedding galleries will miss photos like details, flatlays, getting ready, bride and bridesmaids, sunset photos, etc. I usually capture the groom and groomsman, cocktail hour, different angles during portrait sessions, and wedding party photos. However, when I'm hired to be a second photographer, I'm also prepared to take over as a lead photographer if the lead photographer is running late, has a car broken down, or caught COVID-19 or the flu.

<h2>Do you often shoot weddings that have a similar size and style to the one we are planning? </h2>
The short answer is yes. I was a second/third shooter for many wedding photographers when I started shooting weddings. Some luxury photographers required me to sign an NDA about their clients and locations. Some are luxury South Asian weddings with over 500 guests, exclusive venues like the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD, and Perona Farms in New Jersey, all the way to weddings with a guest count of under 50 in a hotel conference room.

Being a wedding photographer for a few years, I learned there are many ceremony and reception venues, so chances are I haven't shot a wedding at your venue...yet. 
However, I usually research the venue and arrive early at the venue for a quick walkthrough to find the best photo spots. I also gather "intel" from other vendors that have worked there to identify the best place to shoot.
If the venue allows me to do a visit/tour before your wedding, I will always go out and check it out!

Hey there! So, you've booked a photo shoot. The date is approaching, and that sneaky little thought creeps in - "What on earth should I wear?" As your photographer, I've got your back. Let's dive into this discussion like a swan into a serene lake - gracefully and without a splash! First off, remember this: comfort is key. If you're uncomfortable, it'll show in the pictures. So, choose outfits that make you feel like a rockstar, or a princess, or a suave secret agent - whatever floats your boat! Now, let's talk colors. Neutrals are a safe bet. What to wear for your engagement shoot?

<h3>What's your editing style? </h3>

My photo editing journey is a crazy rollarcoaster. I went from starting dark and moody to a bright and airy look that leans towards a warmer tone across the image. But I have now settled into a true-to-life with a pop of color editing style.

My photography journey started as a photojournalist, shooting sports and events for a local newspaper. Working for a newspaper, I had to deliver an unedited, photoshop-free image with a fast turnover rate, so photos had to be ready to be delivered on camera. These days, I get a lot of my inspiration from photojournalism, especially wedding photojournalists. The way they incorporate everything from the background all the way to how they use light and color is what I strive to deliver for my couples.

To put it in a few words, it will be Naturally Bold and Timeless.

<h3>How do I pose a couple?</h3>
&nbsp;
So it's funny to explain this because when I'm doing headshot photography for my corporate clients, I do a lot of coaching and direction when it comes to the classic white background headshot.
&nbsp;
For weddings, however, I would say it's 20% of the time, I'm doing my posing and coaching, and 80%, it's my version of photojournalistic. Most of the time I'm trying to find and capture creative candids, but if we have time to do some portraits, I will get my couple to act out photo prompts or use my favorite line, "Stand there, look at each other, and smile." That's what I did for this photo.

Again to put it in a few words, 20% posed, 80% photojournalistic. I'm also a man of few words, so I also embrace laughter after a long pause of awkward silence

How I pose couple and my editing style.

Yina &amp; Norman are once again, my friends during my time at Stevenson University. They met during college and have been inseparable. So when I learn they are engaged, I asked if they want to do an engagement shoot, and of course, they said yes! And so, we are back at Stevenson University, but for a whole different experience compared to Jess &amp; Matt's engagement shoot.

We started the engagement shoot at the original campus, aka Greenspring Campus or what used to be known as Villa Julie College. What I like about this campus compare to the "Main campus" is the campus has a sense of nostalgia. Campus is filled with greenery, shade, and feels like a whole different school. Calm and peaceful is how I'll describe it.
&nbsp;
After a few shots, we switched to North Campus to grab photos at the Manning Academic Center. This building is where I had 90% of my undergraduate classes. It felt like being back at home. Guess the slogan, "SU is home," kind of fits the vibe for this shoot.

Oh fun fact: Yina and Norman first met at this building during a communication class. So I told them to reenact their first day of class and play the giant Jenga sitting in the hall and do a walk through memory lane.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to capture the love story of JJ and Emilie during their engagement photoshoot in the picturesque setting of Havre De Grace, Maryland. Being a close acquaintance of JJ since his days on the Stevenson University tennis team, which he joined a year after I had graduated, made the experience all the more special. Emilie and JJ share an intriguing dynamic. Emilie, always encouraging JJ to channel his romantic side, would ironically cringe and playfully push him away when he did. The banter and unique chemistry made for some silly moments captured during the shoot. The decision to set their engagement shoot in Havre de Grace wasn't random. This quaint little town, with its riverside locale, exudes a charming small port town vibe. However, the real reason behind choosing this location was Emilie's insistence. Her brother had previously taken his senior photos here and she was adamant about following the tradition. Poor JJ, as smitten as he was, had little control over this decision. Their love story began in the least romantic of places - a science fair. Yet, the sparks flew and they've been inseparable ever since. Their shared sense of humor and undeniable compatibility make them a truly hilarious and endearing couple. They are now joyfully preparing to take the plunge and say their vows in Columbia, Maryland, in November 2024. I can't wait to capture their journey as they step into this new phase of life, with their love story continuing to unfold with every passing moment. Their engagement shoot was just the beginning, and I look forward to being there to document their big day. Being a documentary wedding photographer is a job that I take great pride in. My camera is my paintbrush and the beautiful moments of a wedding day are my canvas. This trust also translates into a less stressful environment. Large weddings, with their strict timelines and vast guest lists, can often feel like a high-pressure photo shoot. However, small weddings are different. The timelines are more relaxed, giving me the opportunity to take in the day, to absorb the atmosphere, to hunt for those perfect, candid shots. There&rsquo;s a rhythm to the day that&rsquo;s less rushed, less frantic. But don&rsquo;t mistake relaxed for unorganized. Eight hours can cover the full wedding day from getting ready all the way to the last song during the reception. This package has everything from the 6-hour package PLUS additional photos/videos clips and a second shooter. This also gives more time to be creative and capture different and unique photos and video clips. With a second shooter, you will have different angles, and photographers/videographers in multiple locations in a specific time. This package offers much flexibility since we will create the photography/videography timeline together for your wedding. The Engagement Session package includes up to 1.5 hour of shooting time, two outfit changes, and all edited keeper images.
